Is Sod Better than Planting Grass?
Homeowners opt for sod versus planting grass in order to instantly transform their landscape. Sod brings a beautiful, lush lawn to your home immediately. If you choose to plant grass, you will have to wait a month or more before it starts to substantially grow and even a season or two before it grows as thick as sod.
Typically, homeowners request a sod installation after refreshing their landscaping or when moving into a once barren home. Due to the immediate benefits of sod and the amount of care it needs before it arrives at your home, it is a much larger investment when compared to planting grass.
How is Sod Installed?
At Dyess Irrigation, we generally follow this procedure to install your sod:
- Removing existing grass and weeds along with any rocks or other debris in the soil
- Amending and improving the properties of existing soil, if necessary
- Grading the soil so it is level and drains properly
- Installing the sod with industry best practices
- Setting up irrigation or sprinklers to ensure the sod receives plenty of water
How to Care for Fresh Sod
The ongoing maintenance for fresh sod will differ from typical grass. Use these tips to make sure your sod fully adjusts to its new location and remains healthy:
- Keep your sod moist throughout the day right after initial installation. This means watering about three to four times a day for five to ten minutes.
- Mow your sod for the first time about 14 days after installation. Slowly cut back on waterings prior to the first mow.
- Avoid foot traffic on your new lawn for at least the first two weeks.
